What is a total hip replacement?
A hip replacement is a common type of surgery where a damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial one known as a prosthesis. Adults of any age can be considered for a hip replacement, although most are carried out from 60 onwards. A modern prosthesis is designed to last for at least 15 years.
What does it involve?
Early mobilisation, muscle strength building, and outdoor walking are vital following total hip replacement surgery. Our team of specialist home visit phyios will take you through each step providing you with an individualised treatment regime specific to your requirements. Treatment can include strength building, walking aid progression, stair practice and working to improve your hip movement.

At Post Op Home Physio we follow the guidelines from your consultant to make sure we work together as a team.

Early exercises after your total hip replacement
The days after your surgery are the most vital. The exercises we will provide you will be specifically designed for the surgery that you had. We will first assess your hip movement and strength and design a plan which will include pictures, descriptions and video links of the exercises. Completing these will build your confidence and allow you to relieve yourself of your walking aid as early as possible.

Exercising from day 1 can help you to lubricate your new joint, improve your function, and allow you to complete stairs and other challenges without concern. Our team provide written information booklets on how to use your walking aid and the best way to complete stairs without pain.

Your mobile physio will remain goal focused throughout and be driven by your needs. We aim to make the recovery period as quick as possible, without compromising quality. After the initial intensive programme, your domiciliary physio will advise on the best way to reduce the sessions and take charge of your rehab. We encourage exercises to be completed daily so your recovery can remain on track. Our sessions often include outdoor therapy to promote independence and confidence in functional tasks such as getting on and off the bus, walking to the shops, and general outdoor mobility.

We are covered by most health insurances and can organise your London home physio direct to your house. Next day appointments are available and we cover all London boroughs.

When is a total hip replacement needed?
Hip replacement surgery is usually necessary when the hip joint is worn or damaged to the extent that your mobility is reduced and you experience a lot of pain. The most common cause of hip pain in older adults is from osteoarthritis. A hip replacement can also be required after a fracture.
When is it appropriate to have a total hip replacement?
A hip replacement is recommended if other treatments, such as physiotherapy or steroid injections have not helped to reduce pain or improve mobility. You may require a total hip replacement if:

  • You have severe pain, swelling and stiffness in the hip
  • Your mobility is reduced
  • Your hip pain interferes with the quality of your life
  • You cannot sleep because of your hip pain
  • Everyday tasks, such as getting out of a car, or shopping, are difficult
  • Your hip pain is adversely affecting your mood and social life
How is a total hip replacement performed?
To perform a total hip replacement your surgeon:

  • Makes an incision over the front of your hip, through the layers of tissue
  • Removes damaged bone and cartilage, leaving healthy bone intact
  • Implants the prosthetic socket into your pelvic bone
  • Replaces the round ball on top of your femur with the prosthetic ball, which is attached to a stem that fits onto your thighbone
How do I prepare for a total hip replacement?
Before surgery, your consultant will meet with you to address the following:

  • Your medical history and current medications
  • Complete a general physical examination to make sure you are healthy enough to undergo surgery
  • Examine your hip, looking closely at the range of movement in your joint and the strength of the surrounding muscles
  • Order blood tests and complete and X-ray
How do I recover from a total hip replacement?
  • Early mobilisation – Walking with crutches on the day of surgery is now encouraged
  • Pressure application – Compression stockings are advised
  • Blood thinning medication – Your surgeon may prescribe this after surgery
  • Help at home – Arrange a friend or family member to assist with household tasks
  • Home physio – Here’s where we come in!
